After winning the Scottish Division One now the Scottish Premier League (SPL) title in 1980, he had a four-year spell with London club Spurs, where he won the English FA Cup winners medals in 1981 and 1982 and the UEFA Cup in 1984, where he scored his penalty in the final as Spurs overcame Anderlecht in a shootout. He also scored for Spurs in their defeat by Liverpool FC in the 1982 English Football League Cup final.

He was a member of the Scottish national team at the Espana 1982 and Mexico 1986 FIFA World Cups.

He eventually scored an indirect freekick goal in his Testimonial Game against AEK Athens of Greece at Goodison Park on August 8, 2012.
