Bobby Moore

On May 29 1963, 22 years and 47 days old defender, Bobby Moore captained the Three Lions of England for the first time in just his 12th appearance after the retirement of Johnny Haynes and an injury to his successor, Jimmy Armfield. 

He was the youngest man ever to captain England at the highest level. England defeated Czechoslovakia 4–2 in the game and Armfield returned to the role of captain afterwards, but new coach Alf Ramsey gave Moore the job permanently during a series of summer friendlies in 1964, organised because England had failed to reach the latter stages of the UEFA European Championships.

He later captained the Three Lions to victory at the England 1966 FIFA World Cup finals at Wembley Stadium against West Germany.

Stan Mortensen joined Blackpool in 1941 but had to wait until 1946 to make his debut, after the outbreak of World War II had brought a temporary halt to competitive football. He helped Blackpool to three English FA Cup finals, finishing on the losing side in 1948 and again in 1951, before finally tasting a thrilling 4-3 victory for the Seasiders on May 16, 1953 against Bolton Wanderers - when he became the first and only player to score a hat-trick in an English FA Cup final played at the Wembley Stadium.


He scored 197 league goals in 317 games during his time at Bloomfield Road before going on to enjoy brief spells at Hull City, Southport and Bath. He retired from the game in May 1959, but was persuaded to make a comeback for Lancaster City in November 1960. He finally hung up his boots for good in March 1962.

The first time the Azzurris of Italy conquered the Three Lions of England, (the so called “inventors”of football) on their home soil at the Wembley Stadium was on November 11, 1973 in an international friendly match. 

The only goal of the game was scored by Fabio Capello in the 87th minute with the aid of Peter Shilton, who could only parry out a powerful Giorgio Chinaglia cross and the former England Coach was on hand to sidefoot the ball home and send hundreds of Italian waiters in London home happy.

It ended 4-2 in favour of England after extra-time with one of England's goal adjudged by video replay not to have crossed the line.

It was against the White Eagles of Serbia on September 9, 2009 that Hugo Lloris picked up the only red card by a goalkeeper in the history of the ''Les Bleus'' the French national team, following a foul on Nikola Žigić in the penalty box, despite replays showing otherwise.

Lloris earned his first cap under Raymond Domenech on November, 19 2008 in a 0–0 draw with Uruguay also in an international friendly match. On November 17, 2010, Lloris captained France, for the first time, in the team's 2–1 victory over the Three Lions of England at Wembley Stadium. 

After leading France out 6 more times on an interim basis, on February 28, 2012, he was named first-choice captain of the national team by manager Laurent Blanc ahead of UEFA Euro 2012.

He was in the squads for both UEFA Euro 96 in England and the France 1998 FIFA World Cup where he played as cover for David Seaman all through. He retired following the 2002/2003 season.

Under Sven Goran Eriksson, Danny Mills made his international debut for the English Three Lions on May 25th, 2001, as a substitute in a friendly against Mexico at Pride Park. His first start came on March 27th, 2002 in a friendly against the Azzuris of Italy. 

He eventually earned a total of 19 caps without a goal for his country, all earned in games played away from the Wembley Stadium, because the stadium was under reconstruction, which is a record for an England player in the modern era.

David O' Leary is the only player to be substituted in an international match at Wembley Stadium to be replaced by his brother who is Pierce O' Leary who was playing for Shamrock Rovers. This happened  when the Republic of Ireland lost 0-2 to England on February 6, 1980 in a Euro 1980 qualification match.

Gary Linekar of Everton FC outclasses Mark Lawrenson

Mark Lawrenson was the only English born player in Liverpool F.C.'s starting line-up in the 1986 English FA Cup final played at the prestigious Wembley Stadium. It ended with the Reds defeating neighbours Everton F.C. 3-1 in the first and still the only English FA Cup final Merseyside derby that had Gary Linekar opening scoring. He played a total of 241 games and scored 11 goals for the Merseyside outfit from 1981 - 1988.
