He has played for other Italian clubs like Piacenza, Hellas Verona FC, Parma FC, AC Milan, Genoa CFC and  Bologna FC.

At first attempt, Alberto Zaccheroni led AC Milan to their 16th Scudetto in the 1998/1999 Italian Serie A season where they pipped Sven Goran Eriksson led SS Lazio to the title with just one point. He was appointed from Udinese Calcio where he brought in lethal striker Oliver Bierhoff and the defensive right winger Thomas Helveg to help win the title.

He introduced ACMilan to his unorthodox 3-4-3 formation, in which Bierhoff was a perfect center forward, scoring 20 goals in the league.

AC Milan had a marvelous second half of the season, in which it kept pace with Serie A championship leaders SS Lazio, then passing the Romans when they had a couple of slips. In the end, a win in the final day was more than enough to clinch AC Milan's first league title in three years.

The journey started from January 20, 1984 when he replaced the injured Sergio Battistini in a match against Udinese at the age of 16 to May 31, 2009 in his last game as an active player which is also the last match of the season, against Fiorentina, which the Rossoneri won 2–0.

He fractured his skull and damaged his eye socket and he spent approximately 2 days in a light coma. However, he went on to make full recovery but not with the potential.

Perugia in 1979

 Perugia went undefeated all season in 1978-1979 and still finished second in Italian Serie A to AC Milan. They won 11 games but drew a massive 19 games out of 30 matches they played that season. Perugia's defense ended up conceeding only 16 goals, led by Antonio Ceccarini and it was Perugia's best ever finish in the Italian Serie A history.
