Under Fabio Capello in the 2000/2001 season, AS Roma won their third Italian Serie A title called the Scudetto on the last day of the season by beating Parma 3–1, edging out Juventus by two points.  

Francesco Totti was a large reason for the title victory and he would become one of the main heroes in the club's history, going on to break several club records. 

Other important players during this period included Gabriel Batistuta (who was the league Top Scorer with 20 goals), Aldair, Cafu, Vincenzo Montella, Antonio Casanno, Emerson, Walter Samuel, Vincent Candela, Hidetoshi Nakata, Damiano Tommasi and Marco Delvecchio.

Luigi Di Biagio then playing for AS Roma missed the crucial penalty kick in the shoot-out that eliminated the Azzurris of Italy in the quarter final match between them and the Les Bleus of France in the France 1998 FIFA World Cup at the Stade de France. He had 31 caps and scored only two goals from 1998-2002 for the national team and he currently handles the Italian U-21 team.

 Italy is the only country to have won all three European club diadems in the 1989/1990 season. AC Milan won the UEFA Champions Cup (now UEFA Champions League), the UEFA Cup Winners Cup was clinched by Sampdoria and the UEFA Cup was captured by Juventus FC. Interestingly, all three teams were beaten by AS Roma in the 1990/1991 Coppa Italia campaign.
