He banged in 31 goals in 34 matches in the 1998/1999, the highest season total in the Eredivisie and second-highest in Europe overall. He also capped off the year by winning the Dutch Player of the Year award. Van Nistelrooy also scored 29 goals in the 1999/2000 season to finish a wonderful period with his Dutch Eredivisie side.
