Atthe Italia 1990 FIFA World Cup finals, England's Three Lions managed by Bobby Robson became the first side in the competition's history to play extra time in three successive matches against the Rode Duivels of Belgium (second round), Indomitable Lions of Cameroon (quarter final) and West Germany who beat them on penalties in the semi finals.
The quintessential goal scoring midfield player David Platt scored 27 goals in 62 caps for the Three Lions of England, but was given his first cap by the late Bobby Robson in an International Friendly against the Azzuris of Italy in November 1989 when he was still with Aston Villa. He was included in the England squad when Robson named his 22 player-squad for the Italia 90 FIFA World Cup. He however open his scoring account for the Three Lions in the last minute of extra time during the second round match against the les Diables Rouges (Red Devils ) of Belgium.
