Gabriel Heinze of Argentina has a German father and Italian mother, but was born in Patagonia in Southern region of the Republic of Argentina, where he made eight appearances in 1996/97 season at Newell's Old Boys before moving to Spain to sign for Real Valladolid in a long spell in Europe.
