Harry Gregg who joined Manchester United in 1957 from Doncaster Rovers became the costliest goalkeeper for £23,000 at that time. Just four months after the Munich disaster that claimed lives of the Busby Babes, Gregg played for Northern Ireland at the FIFA World Cup in Sweden. He was taken by land and sea and was voted goalkeeper of the tournament, ahead of Russia’s Lev Yashin.
