Brazilian goal poacher Aílton Gonçalves da Silva popularly known as Aílton was selected in 2004 as the first foreigner to win the prestigious  Fußballer des Jahres (German Footballer of the Year) award after emerging top goalscorer in the German Bundesliga with 28 goals in the 2003/2004 season while playing for Werder Bremen who won the double.
